Confirmation

Sunday Mornings

9:45 am – 10:45 am September – June

The confirmation program is a time of instruction in the foundations of faith and spiritual growth, leading to the Rite of Confirmation where an individual affirms (or confirms) their baptism by publicly professing their faith.

Confirmation programs are traditionally structured for students in junior high school. The reasoning behind this is that these are critical years in our young people’s social, emotional, physical – and spiritual – development. This is a life-changing time for our young people, whether we plan for it or not. For this reason, we, as a community of faith, take this time in a young person’s life very seriously and intentionally plan ways to help them develop into health, holy, mature Christian adults.

Objectives:

  1. Instruct the youth of the congregation and community in the foundations of the Christian faith.
  2. Help the youth understand the Lutheran tradition and how it informs our understanding of God and life.
  3. Assist the youth in understanding themselves in light of who God is.
  4. Model for our youth happy, healthy, and holy Christian relationships.
  5. Continue with our youth beyond confirmation and encourage them in the living out of the Christian faith and life.

Essential we seek to guide our young adults not only in professing their faith but also demonstrating their faith.

Primary Approach:

The confirmation program is primarily for students in 6th through 8th grade. The confirmation program plan follows a three year cycle:

  • Year 1 ~ Bible: Old & New Testament
  • Year 2 ~ Foundations of Faith: Ten Commandments, Apostles Creed, the Lord’s Prayer & the Sacraments
  • Year 3 ~ Disciplines of Faith: Lutheran Confessions, Disciplines of Faith, & Living in Community

Typically, following the 8th grade year, the youth will apply for the Rite of Confirmation, which consists of an application process:

  • Statement of Faith
  • Self Evaluation
  • Two References
  • Faith Practices Plan
  • Exit Interview

The Rite of Confirmation is held annual on Reformation Sunday (the end of October).
